I took it to mean that actual literature are those books that make a statement about society and ask the reader to re-evaluate their own beliefs, rather than novels meant to entertain. If I'm getting that right, I think it's a boon to the mystery publishing industry, or the "genre" industry, more broadly, that more authors are breaking out of the constraints that force them to limit their intellectual exploration of topics.
On another note, I liked the book, but not as much as you. And not as much as In the Woods. For me, it's first and foremost a mystery and as thought-provoking and engaging as the storytelling was, the mystery aspect fell flat.Alicia Barberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07682154174815319936noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3164556861454970487.post-307801676084048702009-12-28T15:46:28.850-05:002009-12-28T15:46:28.850-05:00If you have any non-fiction recommendations for me...If you have any non-fiction recommendations for me, please let me know. :-)Clarissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11027134365260069910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3164556861454970487.post-11677580779589296932009-12-28T10:12:14.917-05:002009-12-28T10:12:14.917-05:00What is "actual literature?"
I don'...What is "actual literature?"

I don't buy that mystery novels (or sf, or horror, etc.) can't be actual literature. Do genre characteristics automatically deny a work literature status? If so, why?

Though I'm not quite sure how you're defining it, I'm pretty sure the "actual literature" that I've read -- quite a lot of it but probably not more than you -- wasn't very applicable to my life, or even that interesting, and certainly most of it wasn't very insightful.

All that quibbling aside, great review -- another book I'll be checking out.

I've been reading too much dry non-fiction lately.

-MikeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
