The world is changing so fast and new technologies keep appearing so often that many professions disappear almost on a daily basis. The good news is that new professions are created just as often. The folks at pronexia.blogspot.com (a job search blog) have just shared with me that recently employers have been extremely interested in hiring "social media specialists."
A social media specialist is a person who will supervise the corporate blog, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, etc. Obviously, any candidate for such a position cannot be expected to have an extensive work experience. At first glance, being a social media specialist might seem like a simple job. Anybody who has tried to promote a blog, gain Twitter followers or acquire more LinkedIn contacts knows, however, that social media might be quite tricky. Still, what a cool job! I wish it had existed when I was choosing my career path. Who knows, I might have chosen differently and would now be a social media specialist.

Perhaps we'll see a mass migration of all the SEO specialists out there.
A friend of mine has already been working as a social media specialist for about an year now. :)
A lot of people who work as webmasters or outreach specialists (or some combination of the two) wind up filling this role by default.
Allow me to say that I am glad you are a professor and a really interesting blogger.
Thank you, David! You are always so kind and encouraging.
