In two weeks our university is going to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War. Students and faculty members are invited to bring the mementos of Civil War that belong to their families. They are also urged to abstain from bringing any of their heirloom firearms to the exhibition of mementos.

Curious. I would think that firearms from that era would probably be non-functional since ammunition is likely not available unless homemade. So, safety is not an issue, and omitting them leads to a strange view of the war.
Does anyone really keep relics during 150 years?
I submitted similar action in Russia.
I can find in the house things from Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), some family photos from October revolution times (about 1917), but not earlier.
I don't know, my friend. And, unfortunately, I will not be able to see the exhibition since I will be away.
"Unfortunately" from your`s lips is heard as pun :-)
You know me well. :-) :-)
