The Guilt of Abstinence Pushers

The Republican Mark Souder of Indiana has dedicated years to the propaganda of his ridiculous abstinence-only policies. Of course, as happens so often with these pseudo-religious freaks, he has been caught with his pants down. After the news broke about his affair with a staffer, Souder had to resign. In his resignation statement, Souder said the following:
I SINNED AGAINST GOD, MY WIFE AND MY FAMILY BY HAVING A MUTUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH A PART-TIME MEMBER OF MY STAFF.IN THE POISONOUS ENVIRONMENT OF WASHINGTON DC, ANY PERSONAL FAILING IS SEIZED UPON, OFTEN TWISTED, FOR POLITICAL GAIN. I AM RESIGNING RATHER THAN TO PUT MY FAMILY THROUGH THAT PAINFUL, DRAWN-OUT PROCESS.DIANE AND MY FAMILY WERE MORE THAN WILLING TO STAND HERE WITH ME. WE ARE A COMMITTED FAMILY. BUT THE ERROR IS MINE AND I SHOULD BEAR THE RESPONSIBILITY, NOT ONLY AM I THANKFUL FOR A LOVING FAMILY BUT FOR A LOVING GOD. MY COMFORT IS THAT GOD IS A GRACIOUS AND FORGIVING GOD TO THOSE WHO SINCERELY SEEK HIS FORGIVENESS AS I DO. BUT I AM SO ASHAMED TO HAVE HURT THOSE I LOVE.I AM SO SORRY TO HAVE LET SO MANY FRIENDS DOWN, PEOPLE WHO HAVE FOUGHT SO HARD FOR ME.
What I find especially appalling is that even now Souder doesn't ask for forgiveness all those kids whose lives he attempted to destroy by his hateful anti-sex, abstinence-only policies. He has discovered exactly where the sexually repressive views of his own party lead people. He has discovered that the anti-sex bent of the Republicans breeds personal misery. Still, he blames "the poisonous environment" of Washington for what happened to him. Like there is anybody stupid enough not to realize that it's hypocrites like Souder who make the American politics such a vilely poisonous space.

I agree with you, but I think when it comes to political scandals my standards are pretty low. I actually think this apology is much better than it could have been. At least he admits

1. That he did it
2. That he was wrong (even calls it a "personal failing"), and
3. That he's sorry

I actually think that's pretty good.

This public exhibitionism is, in my opinion, completely useless. What do I care who, why and when he slept with? He should be publicly apologizing about his stupid policies, not about his affairs.

True, but at least he's resigning.

Hey, maybe if he'd followed his stupid policies, he wouldn't have had anything to apologize for.

Just a thought.
