"Vesti La Giubba" by Pavarotti

This is my most favorite aria ever from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. I have listened to it hundreds of times but it still always makes me cry.

This opera has always annoyed me, the beautiful music notwithstanding. It seems not to question the whole concept that a woman is a man's property. This deeply offends me.

You are completely right in that not just this opera but the operatic genre in general is heavily patriarchal. In all of my favorite operas, I have to dissociate myself from the meaning of the story the opera is narrating and concentrate exclusively on the music. This is why I prefer to listen to operas in the languages that I don't understand. :-)
