The Weirdest People Out There. . .

. . . are the ones who actually care about something as inane as the royal wedding. I read online that there are people who get together and organize royal-wedding-watching parties. I find this to be just mystifying. There is so much stuff going on in the world, so many important events, so many books to read, music to listen to, ideas to discuss. Who on earth has the time, the energy and the interest for some stupid ceremony commemorating a relationship of complete strangers? Strangers who haven't even done anything interesting with their lives other than being born to a certain social group. I barely had the time to interrupt a fascinating discussion of class relations to let the judge do her spiel during my own marriage ceremony. Why would I want to waste my life on somebody else's?

Yes, I was forced to conclude that there was no news worthy of television coverage this morning except on the Weather Channel.

People were getting up for this at 5 am or something. I'd do that for the elections but something like this??

Just finished blogging about why I wtached. I get up for elections, funerals, weddings etc. Not sure what that says about me :)

I am also baffled, particularly as I feel as though I've already heard more than enough just opening Facebook and hearing people talk around me. If I get up at 5am, it had better be for something much more exciting!

That is hilarious! I too watched the Weather Channel today because it was the only channel not showing the exact same thing over and over again. The Weather Channel might have seen its ratings go up today. ;)

My mother got so sick of the wedding that she turned on the Food Channel. But even there they were broadcasting the wedding. :-)

I have blogs in several different language in my blogroll (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, French). So I was exposed to multilanguage reports on the wedding today.

Now, we are to brace ourselves for a royal baby.

I myself cannot understand the obsession. Totally absurd, pointless, wasteful, useless, and absolutely and completely idiotic.

The search feature does not work for comments, apparently. Did you ever answer my comment somewhere about why a few of the people in the 60's antiwar movement felt that the U. S. might be better off with a hereditary head of state with no actual power?

I somehow missed it by now i found it. It's here: http://clarissasbox.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-not-to-care-about-royal-wedding.html

I find the idea of maintaining loyalty to a politician who disappointed you (or really anybody you have never even met) quite disturbing. This is precisely what I don't understand in this whole brouhaha about the wedding. These are complete strangers. How can anybody possibly care about their marriages, clothes or anything else. But people seem very invested on an emotional level. If, however, their neighbors are celebrating, they might often just pass by without even acknowledging.

And then people who might easily cheat on partners or betray friends, want to remain loyal to some guy in the White House.

Weird.

Yes, and then, all of us have grown on fairy tales, in which wedding - the happy end.
For this reason wedding of kings cause pleasant associations from the childhood.
