Why Is It So Empty?

As I'm learning more about St. Louis, I'm realizing that it's quite a nice city. One thing that bothers me on every visit I make to St. Louis, though, is how empty the streets are. Today it's Sunday, the weather is beautiful, it's sunny, so where are the people?

And it isn't just downtown that's so empty of people. Yesterday we walked on Euclid and it was the same.

Does anybody know why this happens? I've never seen anything ike this anywhere else and it's quite disturbing to me.

Is everyone in church??

Or is the reputation St. Louis has as a high-crime area scared everyone into staying home??

It isn't like this only on Sundays. It's always like this.

This is a complete mystery to me.

I was there for a conference a few years ago and downtown was completely deserted on the weekends. A sign of a dying city?

Phoenix was like that too. My understanding is that there are a number of cities where the downtown is mostly for business; when businesses are closed, no one's around. Weekend "action" is in the burbs.
