Conservatives Win in Canada

Here is what the election results look at this point:

Even though the outcome is obvious, you can still consult the updated numbers here.

Michael Ignatieff, the leader of the Canadian Liberals, is so unappealing as a politician that he managed to drag his party down to the third place. The second place is now firmly occupied by the NDP. For those of you who do not follow Canadian politics, if Ralph Nader could organize a viable political party in the US, it would be the American version of the Canadian NDP.

What the results of this election tell us is that Canadian progressives are an overwhelming majority in the country. At this point, their vote is split between the old and corrupt Liberals and the new and hopeful NDP. Today's victory of the Conservatives is not a victory at all, in my opinion. This is the very last chance they get to grab for power. Soon, the progressives will get their shit together and take our country back. And if you want to tell me otherwise, do it on some other day. Today, I've got to believe this.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could get together right now, get totally drunk and sing "We shall overcome"? :-)

WOW. Our country is screwed.

HARPER IS IN CONTEMPT OF PARLIAMENT... why would we sweep that under the rug, regardless of political standing? Clean up one mess before you start another.

This is disgusting, unethical and only SHEEP are happy with the outcome of this election.

You probably only post comments from ppl who agree with you, but this is a democracy,.... So consider that the conservatives are manipulating us all while stealing our money and endangering our future. Anyone who believes harper is going to help us has been eating pellets for too long and easily led astray.

This is payback for the 90's when frustrated conservatives watched the Reform and PC's split the non-Liberal vote election after election.
Hee's my prediction: the NDP has to now deal with having 60% of its candidates being from Quebec which means it'll slowly morph into a separatist party, lest the BQ steal them back in 4 years. That'll cost them votes in the Rest of Canada which means this is a (hopefully) one time orange wave.
The Liberals, meanwhile, are beholden to tradition to pick a French leader to replace the English Ignatieff. Their cupboard is pretty bare so unless Chretien is thinking of having another go at it, they won't be a threat for 1-2 elections. Go blue!

I don't really understand the Parliamentary system. Is there any consolation in the fact that the Conservatives are far from a majority?
